Roy S. Benedict, 90, lifelong resident of Groton, died Friday at the New York State Veterans' Home in Oxford. Roy grew up on Spring Street and was a graduate of Groton High School. He was the son of the late Charles R. and Maude L. (Smith) Benedict.
Roy was a World War II Army Veteran who retired in 1978 after more than 25 years as a machine operator for Therm Inc. in Ithaca. He also operated an auto repair business from his home. Roy maintained a winter residence in Winter Haven Florida for 30 years before his wife, Irma passed away in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion Post #800 in Groton, a longtime member of the Groton Community Church, and Roy was a F&AM, a member of lodges both in NY and FL and also a member of the Tigris Shrine.
Roy was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, the former Irma C. Dorr, in 2005 and by their son, Tom Benedict, in May 2012.
Surviving are his daughter, Marie (John) Dentes of Aurora, NY; a son: Dan (Mary) Benedict of Cortland; two step-sons: Gary Karlson of Painesville, OH and Joe Karlson of Auburn; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Friends may call Thursday from 3 to 5 pm at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton, NY, with a funeral service following at 5pm. Burial will be in Bird Cemetery, Locke Friday. Krueger Funeral Home in Mattydale has charge of the arrangements.
